My Summer Haiku - Poetry Slam - Kick Start - Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Iwa

Today for Summer Learning Journey we made summery Haikus.

Haiku Poems came from Japanese literature during the 17th century. It did not have the name Haiku until the 19th century. I did my Haiku about the beach because it's my favourite part of summer. I thought I would do something different this time so I used Jamboard which I know how to use but do not use it very often.

I enjoyed writing my summer haiku because I could choose pretty much anything summery. I really enjoy making these because I love describing things without saying its name and only being allowed to use a certain amount of syllables is really fun and a bit tricky.

I found it tricky to make my haiku in the right format. If you don't know, haikus follow a pattern. Its syllables go from 5 to 7 then 5 again. A few times I thought of something then it was eight syllables so I had to think hard to make it fit and use different words. I used the online thesaurus to help.

Here is my Summer Haiku:

  1. Kia ora Kylah,

This is another awesome and creative poem! Well done creating a Haiku using the 5-7-5 syllable structure. I know how tricky it can be to find words to fit perfectly in the number of syllables, so this is very impressive!

The cool thing about poetry is that you can describe things without naming them, and you do that very well. Have you written poetry before these activities? I enjoy writing poetry, I think it's a really creative and emotive way of writing about things.

Great job also being creative and using Jamboard! It's always good to practice old skills so you don't forget how to use them.

I hope you keep writing these fabulous poems, and don’t forget to submit them to the poetry slam!

    Ngā mihi,
    Lauren

  2. Kia ora Kylah, I really enjoyed listening to your poem and being transported to the beach in summer. You are a fabulous poet! Like you, I also love summer, the water and the challenge of being a wordsmith - as you said, it can be tricky to craft the number of syllables, but it's a satisfying challenge! What beaches have you gone to over the holidays? Are there any close to you? Look forward to hearing from you, Naomi (Manaiakalani Facilitator)
