Snowball Poem - Poetry Slam - Step It Up - Summer Learning Journey Rima Tekau Ma Ono

Today for the Summer Learning Journey we had a poetry slam task. It was to do a snowball poem. This is the step it up task.

A snowball poem has a lot of lines and each line is longer than the last. Sometimes by one letter, and sometimes by one word- like a snowball rolling down a hill, it gets bigger and bigger as it rolls down! There was not very much information on snowball poems, so there is not much information here but the name pretty much explains it!

I found it tricky to make the right amount in my sentences because I kept accidentally having one word less or one word more.

I enjoyed making my poem about surfing because the beach and boogie boarding are one of my favourite things to do in summer. My whanau go every night when the weather is good after dinner to have some family time there while the beach isn't too hot and the chance of getting burnt is a bit lower. One day I want to get a surfboard and start surfing too! 

I found it tricky to make the right amount in my sentences because I kept accidentally having one word less or one word more.

Quatrain - Poetry Slam - Summer Learning Journey Rima Tekau Ma Tahi

Today I did a little research on different types of poems you can write. I found a poem called a Quatrain and made one about my brother who needs glasses. I also noticed that the poetry slam was up to 99 so this blog will be the 100th!

A quatrain is any 4 line poem. 15 possible rhyme sequences. For this one, I did "AABB". But you can do AAAA, ABAB, ABBA and ABCB too!

I enjoyed making my poem because I could make it as funny as I wanted it to be. I put in my poem that when he loses them he cannot see, he might just walk into a tree. I thought it was quite funny as I put it in!

I found it tricky to know what to make my quatrain poem about. I was looking around for inspiration when I saw my brother with his glasses and made a poem about him!

Lilys Finger - The Limerick - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Wha

Today I got a comment from Naomi who is from Manaiakalani. She said I should turn my Clerihew about my sister into a Limerick. In my Limerick, I say it was fixed by a doctor named Billy, but It was not actually fixed by a doctor named Billy the name just rhymed.

A limerick is usually funny and a bit rude. They have five lines with a rhyme scheme of AABBA, in which the first, second and fifth lines rhyme, while the third and fourth lines are shorter and share a different rhyme.

I enjoyed making it a bit funnier because it was scary at the time but we can laugh about it now that it is back on. I did not find anything tricky. I thought this task was really fun and I did not find anything tricky.

Clerihew Poem - Poetry Slam - Step It Up - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Toru

Today for the summer learning journey I wanted to do the Poetry Slam Step it up for this week. We had to do a Clerihew poem and animate it. I chose to make my poem from scratch. It was about my sister who jammed her finger in the door then had to go to the hospital. I actually wrote about this earlier this year. I have a blog about it, check it here. Don't worry, the doctors have stitched my sister's finger back on so it is still there.

I used scratch to code my clerihew poem and used screencastify to record me saying the poem as well as the code running.

A Clerihew poem only has just a few simple rules: They are four lines long. The first and second lines rhyme with each other, and the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other. The first line names a person, and the second line ends with something that rhymes with the name of the person. They are normally for fun.

Magnetic Poetry - Poetry Slam - Step It Up - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Rua

Today for Summer Learning Journey I remembered that I forgot to do the step it up for one of the poetry slams. I made up my own words on the template and made a haiku out of them.

Did you know that Magnetic Poetry was invented by Dave Kapell, who was a songwriter? He wrote words on pieces of paper and rearranged them, hoping to use it as a starting point for lyrics. To keep the arrangements of words from being accidentally disturbed, he thought to glue the paper to magnets.

I enjoyed making the poems because I could write whatever I want. It was also hard to make the poems because I only had certain words to use. I made sure that I had a bit of a plan before making them so it was much easier knowing which words are where.

My Summer Tanka - Poetry Slam - Step It Up - Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Iwa #2

Today for the Summer Learning Journey we had to make Tanka poems.

Tanka's were first written in the seventh century and were one of the first Japanese poems. I thought that Haiku would be older but tankas are 1000 years older!

I enjoyed writing my Tanka because tankas seem really cool to me and they are like haikus which I really like doing. It was also really cool learning that Tanka's were so old yet I am doing one in the distant future of it being invented. I also made a Pivot sentence.

I found it tricky to make what I want to say in the right format. If you don't know, tanka's follow a pattern. Its syllables go from 5 to 7 to 5 again then 7 and 7 again. A few times I thought of something then it was eight syllables so I had to think hard to make it fit and use different words. I used the online thesaurus to help.

My Summer Haiku - Poetry Slam - Kick Start - Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Iwa

Today for Summer Learning Journey we made summery Haikus. 

Haiku Poems came from Japanese literature during the 17th century. It did not have the name Haiku until the 19th century. I did my Haiku about the beach because it's my favourite part of summer. I thought I would do something different this time so I used Jamboard which I know how to use but do not use it very often.

I enjoyed writing my summer haiku because I could choose pretty much anything summery. I really enjoy making these because I love describing things without saying its name and only being allowed to use a certain amount of syllables is really fun and a bit tricky.

Kennings - Summer Learning Journey Poetry Slam Takau Ma Rua

Yesterday for the Summer Learning Journey we had a poetry slam task. It was to do Kennings about Summer. I decided to make my kennings about my favourite place to go to in Summer. Can you guess what it is?

Kennings are often used in poetry for effect. Two words are put together to make one. one example of kennings that we use all the time is Ankle-biter which is used for describing a toddler.

I found this activity really easy, fun and I really enjoyed describing my favourite place. I did not find anything challenging about this activity.

Next time I would add even more descriptive words. I would use words that I don't use very often.
