New Years And How We Celebrate Them Summer Learning Journey Rua Tekau Ma Rima

Today for Summer Learning Journey we had to figure out how other countries celebrate the New Year. 

I had to learn about some countries and put facts into a slide. Then on the Step it up we had to take a photo of ourselves, remove the background, add a picture of the New Year fireworks as the background then add the picture of ourselves with the removed background. I chose to Step up the step it up by making the background a GIF.

I found it interesting that Maori New Year is actually Matariki and it will be an actual public holiday next year. I also found a site that shows each day Matariki is on for the next 30 years. Go check it out here.

Origami Cubes and Boxes Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Wha

Today for Summer Learning Journey we had to make an origami box and cube.

Origami is made from two Japanese words: Ori which means folded and Kami which means paper. Before that, the art was called orikata which means folded shapes. Did you know that an ancient Japanese legend says if you fold one thousand cranes you will be granted a wish?

I enjoyed making the cube and box because they were both a bit of a challenge. They both turned out almost as good as in the video!

I found it tricky to add all 6 pieces to make the cube because when I put them together two of the pieces were only one colour. So I looked at the video again. I noticed that I put two of the pieces the wrong way up and it made it a lot better!

My Weather In A Bag Summer Learning Journey Rua Tekau Ma Toru

Today for Summer Learning Journey we had to make weather in a bag. We had to fill a snap-lock bag with water and add some food colouring. Then leave it in the sun for a few hours, taking a photo of its progress every hour. 

The way it was meant to work is: it will heat up and the water will turn to vapour and cause condensation. Then it was meant to drip from the top causing the effect of rain. 

I found it tricky to get the condensation to actually drip. I think this will of been better on a hotter day as today it was raining quite a lot.

I enjoyed looking for the changes every hour. It was quite fun waiting to see what happens next!

Minecraft - Bees Summer Learning Journey Rua Tekau Ma Rua

Today for Summer Learning Journey we had a Minecraft task. It was about Bees. We learnt all about how bees pollinate and how bees live.

Did you know that all worker bees are female? The boys in the hive are called drones and their job is to pretty much have babies with the queen to reproduce. Did you know that Bees have 5 eyes? They have two big ones, two smaller ones and a really tiny one. Did you know that Bees can taste out of their front feet? Did you know that we would only have four years to live if all bees died?

I enjoyed learning about bees because they are so interesting. They are actually the most studied animal on the planet. That proves that other people think they are interesting too! I really liked this task because it was quite easy and I did not find anything tricky!

My Stick Figure Animation Summer Learning Journey Rua Tekau Ma Tahi

Today for Summer Learning Journey we had to make a Stick Figure Animation. I had the idea to make a flipbook but I could not find the right amount of pieces of paper to make one so I used the template of the online one.

I used Google Slides and I thought that 1 second per slide was way too slow. Then I remembered that one day in cyber smart the teacher teaching it, Mrs Torrie, taught us a way to make GIFs out of slides on a site called Talltweets. You put in a slide then choose how long each slide is. I made mine 0.3 for each of my 78 slides.

The first time someone made a flipbook animation was in 1832. Did you know the German word for flipbook - Daumenkino, which translates to "thumb cinema" pretty much explains what it is.

I enjoyed making the animation because it was fun coming up with ideas on what to make my stick man do. I wanted to make people laugh with this and I hope I achieved that! 

Next time I want to make this with funny music in the background to add the funny effect.

My Family Fingerprints Summer Learning Journey Rua Tekau

Today for Summer Learning Journey we had to find out what my family's fingerprints were.

There are three types of fingerprints: Arch, Whorl and Loop.

Did you know that people's fingerprints can be different types on each finger? You could have a whorl on one finger and an arch on another and a loop on your thumb!

In 1788 an anatomist Johann Christoph Andreas Mayer was the first person to recognize that fingerprints were unique to each person. This is how police find bad guys. They find fingerprints to try and match them up with someone.

The results on the index finger were: My Mum: Arches, Lily: Whorl, Sebastian: Whorl, Killian: Arches, Teddy: Arches and Myself: Whorl. I suspect my Dad has a Whorl because Mum has arches and maybe it is genetic but Dad was asleep after a night shift so I could not do his fingerprint.

I enjoyed looking closely at all the designs because all the whorls and arches looked really cool in the purple play-doh. It had all these tiny lines curving everywhere

I found it tricky to get Teddy (My one-year-old brother) to stay still because he is one and kept moving. So my Mum helped get his fingerprint while I took a picture.

My Summer Tanka - Poetry Slam - Step It Up - Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Iwa #2

Today for the Summer Learning Journey we had to make Tanka poems.

Tanka's were first written in the seventh century and were one of the first Japanese poems. I thought that Haiku would be older but tankas are 1000 years older!

I enjoyed writing my Tanka because tankas seem really cool to me and they are like haikus which I really like doing. It was also really cool learning that Tanka's were so old yet I am doing one in the distant future of it being invented. I also made a Pivot sentence.

I found it tricky to make what I want to say in the right format. If you don't know, tanka's follow a pattern. Its syllables go from 5 to 7 to 5 again then 7 and 7 again. A few times I thought of something then it was eight syllables so I had to think hard to make it fit and use different words. I used the online thesaurus to help.

My Summer Haiku - Poetry Slam - Kick Start - Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Iwa

Today for Summer Learning Journey we made summery Haikus. 

Haiku Poems came from Japanese literature during the 17th century. It did not have the name Haiku until the 19th century. I did my Haiku about the beach because it's my favourite part of summer. I thought I would do something different this time so I used Jamboard which I know how to use but do not use it very often.

I enjoyed writing my summer haiku because I could choose pretty much anything summery. I really enjoy making these because I love describing things without saying its name and only being allowed to use a certain amount of syllables is really fun and a bit tricky.

Scratch Project - Seasonal Greeting Poem Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Waru

Today for the Summer Learning Journey I made a game on Scratch. It was a Seasonal Greeting Card. I used Vector art to make myself, the character in the game. I actually made this at my grandparent's house, so you might hear them in the background if you listen hard enough. I made this interactive card for my Nana and made up a poem.

I enjoyed creating myself on Scratch because I could be as creative as I wanted. Did you know that the character's clothes were the actual clothes I wore today? I wore a weet-bix shirt and purple overalls.

I found it tricky to share my project on scratch because the button that would normally appear did not appear and I could not put it on my blog. I thought about what I should do for a while, and I came up with screencastify. I could record a video of it then put it on my blog. So that is what I have done.

Next time I would add more Christmasy stuff like Christmas trees in the background to give it a more Christmasy look.

A Summery Saturday Morning Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Whetu

Today for Summer Learning Journey I read a book by Margaret Mahy. It was called A Summery Saturday Morning. It is about a bunch of people bringing their two dogs down a windy path and their dogs chase a cat and eight geese.

Margaret Mahy was born on 21st March 1936 and was the eldest of five children growing up. Just like me! Margaret died on 23 July 

I enjoyed making the scene in Minecraft because I could use as much creativity as I wanted. I used an Item called Bone meal to make nature appear when I right-click. It made it easier than putting a load of grass and flowers everywhere and it taking way longer than it should.

My Timeline And a Cicadas Timeline - Cicadas do Maths Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Ono

Today for the summer learning journey we were learning about the life of a cicada. Did you know that a female cicada lays 200-400 eggs? That's crazy! 

When I was really little at daycare, I loved bugs so much that the teachers called me the "snail whisperer." I had lots of cicada shells in a container. My Mum only got rid of them about a year ago. 

There are 3400 different species of cicadas worldwide. The most common here in New Zealand is the Amphipsalta Zelandica which is 80mm long and is what you have most likely seen around here in summer! Only the boy cicadas sing! 

We were also asked to make a timeline to work out where we think we would be at 17, 34, 51, 68, 85, 102! I found this fun as it made me think about the future and where I will be at that time! 

Next time I would like to do some research and a timeline about the lifecycle of a snail!

Music Made Of Random Things Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Rima

Today for the Summer Learning Journey we made music out of random things. I made my music out of a grater, whisk, pepper shaker and a cup filled with water.

I enjoyed making lots of noise because quite often babies are asleep so we need to stay a bit quiet. So I made sure I asked before making so much noise! This activity was really fun, easy and I could not find anything hard.

Next time I would try and make it longer than 11 seconds long because most songs are about 3 minutes long. To make it more like a real song I'll need to make it longer.

My Bridge Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Wha

Today for the Summer Learning Journey I made a bridge. It was a beam bridge with a few things holding it up underneath. I thought at first that I would not be able to stand on it. I could in the end though!

We learnt about tension and compression. Tension is a force that stretches something and compression is a force that squeezes something.

There were four different bridges to choose from; beam, arch, truss and suspension. The beam has a long bit that people drive or walk on and it had long sticks that went all the way down into the ground below. Arch, like its name, has an arch under it to keep it up. Truss has two sticks going down into the ground and also has a lot of triangles on the top stopping people from driving or walking off. Suspension, has two sticks going through the bit people drive on and being connected by curving wires.

I enjoyed making the Duplo because it was really easy and it was not at all hard. I could not find anything tricky in this task because it was so easy and I could understand it really well!

Next time I would use paper to make the bridge and balance rocks on it to make it a bit more interesting than a piece of wood on a bit of oversized lego.

Magic Maths Kick Start Summer Learning Journey Tekau ma Toru

Today I was making sure I had done everything for the Summer Learning Journey. I came across the magic maths. I noticed that I forgot to do the Kick Start and only did the step it up. So today I chose to do that activity.

I enjoyed doing the trick on my sister because she picked a really high number for one of them to see if it would still work. It did! Somehow it still answered the same as it would of if she put 3. This kick start activity was quite easy, fun and I did not find anything tricky.

Next time I would try with more numbers and different siblings.

Kennings - Summer Learning Journey Poetry Slam Takau Ma Rua

Yesterday for the Summer Learning Journey we had a poetry slam task. It was to do Kennings about Summer. I decided to make my kennings about my favourite place to go to in Summer. Can you guess what it is?

Kennings are often used in poetry for effect. Two words are put together to make one. one example of kennings that we use all the time is Ankle-biter which is used for describing a toddler.

I found this activity really easy, fun and I really enjoyed describing my favourite place. I did not find anything challenging about this activity.

Next time I would add even more descriptive words. I would use words that I don't use very often.

Make Something That Floats! - Nanogirl Summer Learning Journey Tekau Ma Tahi

Today for a Nanogirl task we had to make something that floats on water. I decided to see which boat holds the most amount of stones. 

The way boats float is caused by how much air is inside of them. Nanogirl explained this by showing us with tin foil and rolling it into a  ball, it sank! Then she had it flat and it floated! Magic? No! The reason for this is because the rolled tin foil weighs more than the water and there is also no air inside it to balance it out because air weighs way less than water. The flat one has a lot more space around it to make it float and also is not too bunched up and heavy.

The types of boats I made were. Traditional that kind of looked like a hat, a canoe that looked a lot better in the video than it did when I made it, the one Nanogirl made, and one made of straws hot glued together.

I found it hardest to make the canoe, it had lots of very complicated folds but I persevered and got there in the end. The straws one was the easiest to make because it was just hot glue.

Magic Maths With Playing Cards Summer Learning Journey Tekau

Today I had some fun making magic tricks for the Summer Learning Journey. The first one was the one taught in the Summer Learning Journey lesson. The second one I learnt from a Tom Games book. And the third my Mum taught me from when she was a child.

I found it tricky to do the transitions fast because I only just learnt them and could not get them faster in a few of them. So I just did it slowly to make sure did them right.

Next time I would learn to do the magic tricks right and fast to make it look a lot better.

My Aunty Stephanie - Family History Summer Learning Journey Iwa

Today for the Summer Learning Journey I had to interview a family member with a few questions about them. I chose my Aunty Stephanie because she is really inspirational. And she has the same birthday as me!

I found it tricky to write down some of her answers because the questions were asking things like her full name and birth date with the day month and year. So I chose to be cyber smart and not answer them so specifically.

Because my Aunty Stephanie is in Wellington and we had to call her, I found an image online of her doing archery so I added that image off the internet to my slide.

Forced Perspective Photography Summer Learning Journey Wharu

Last week for the Summer Learning Journey we made forced perspective photography. This was so fun! Forced perspective photography is an optical illusion. you make things look bigger or smaller depending on how close to the camera they are. If you want something to appear big, you bring it closer to the camera. If you want them to appear small you make them further away from the camera. 

Did you know that forced perspective was used in the Harry Potter movies to make Hagrid look bigger than everyone else?

I enjoyed taking the photos because they were really fun and easy to make and I could be creative. My favourite photo is the sunshine in a jar because the BFG phizzwizard dream from the book by Roald Dahl inspired me to take that photo. 

I found it tricky to do it at first because it was hard to tell my siblings where to go and for them to stay still long enough for me to take a photo. I found it easier to move my camera to a better place, and even easier just not taking a photo of people and only taking a photo of things instead. 

Next time I would take more pictures because it was so fun to make and I could easily make more.

Vector Art Summer Learning Journey Whetu

Yesterday for Summer Learning Journey we were making vector art. I could not finish it due to seeing it late at night. But for the step it up we had to make a superhero using vector. I learnt how to use Vector art on scratch. Vector art makes your art seem more smooth. Using scratch you can choose between Vector art and Bitmap art. Bitmap is not as good and when zoomed up it is really pixelated. I also used scratch to make my vector art. Not google Drawings.

I enjoyed making my superheroes because they turned out super funny looking! I did Captain Underpants and Batman and Captain Underpants was closest to normal! Batman just looked like a funny looking person with a mask in a black costume!

I found it tricky to make them look normal because they kind of just looked like blobs with faces. So I used a special tool on scratch to move circles into body shapes like legs, arms, face and the body. I also found it tricky to make them say their quotes like "Tra la laaa" for Captain Underpants. So I searched it up and found an image with the right code. I found it really quickly and I am shocked I did not already know the code because it was so easy!

Next time I would make up my own superhero and not an already made up one. I had an idea for a sock superhero called Super Sock Finder that would find a pair of socks when you need them and can't find a pair! I thought it wouldn't be able to save the world but it would be able to save me because I can never find two socks at most times!

Minecraft Hour Of Code Summer Learning Journey Ono

Today I was looking through this years Minecraft tasks to see if they were there this year. I saw that one had come out yesterday and had a look. I joined into the world and I really liked how the person who made this had done so much building! I loved how there was the apollo 11, huge buildings like the sphinx in Egypt and we had to try to build a pyramid! There was also a very long path with Cavemen, it had a dog that we had to return to a Caveman! 

Did you know, NASA launched the Apollo 11 on July 16, 1969? The Apollo 11 crew had three men on board. Neil Armstrong the Mission Commander, Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin the lunar module pilot ( Who inspired Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story ) and Michael Collins the command module pilot.

Egyptians built the Great Pyramid of Giza in 85 years between 2589 and 2504 Before Christ? About 10,000 people were building them and 4,000 of them were slaves. the Giza is still there today! 

Did you know, people started taming dogs more than 30,000 years ago which is more than 10,000 years before people tamed horses? The first dog ever to be tamed was the Bonn-Oberkassel dog. It looked quite like a wolf. It was tamed between 14,000 and 29,000 years ago.

I found it tricky to figure out where the small buttons were to push and open things like secret rooms because they were really well hidden. Especially in the Nasa one, Egypt one and Caveman one. I had to just explore looking for gold blocks with red buttons. Which, I gotta say, was pretty hard!

Next time I would try to take more screenshots of the buttons on gold blocks to show you what I was talking about because you would probably have no idea what I am talking about! I would also show you the images of the buildings to show you how amazing they are!

E hia ngā mea? - How Many things Are There? Summer Learning Journey Rima

Today for the Summer Learning Journey we were making flashcards for kids to learn to count in Te Reo. 

Te Reo is really important to learn as it is our native language. I really want to learn more because I think it is very cool and honours our country. 

Did you know that speaking Te Reo used to be banned in some mainstream New Zealand schools? I think that's really sad and I am glad that they aren't like that now and are embracing our culture. One of my favourite things at school is Kapa Haka. 

I chose all the things in the slides because they all remind me of summer! What reminds you of summer? 

I found it tricky to pronounce some of the words. I had to practice a lot and I hope that I got them all right!

Geome-Tree Triangle Art Summer Learning Journey Wha

Today for Summer Learning Journey I made a Geome-tree. I think that was a well-planned play on words! I learnt about three different types of triangles. One Scalene, Which most right-angled triangles are and no sides are the same. Two Isosceles, Which is also known as an acute triangle and only two sides are the same. And the Equilateral, Which is the same on every side and you see them all the time. 

I enjoyed making the geome-tree. I added the three triangles, then I added a Square and an Oval. A square has four equal sides and an Oval looks a bit like an egg. So I kinda collaged them together to make them.

I found it tricky to make the scalene triangles because I kept accidentally making isosceles triangles by accident! 

All up I made 15 of each triangle for my tree and then added 10 squares and 8 ovals.

Paper Plane - Something that Flies Summer Learning Journey Toru

Today for Summer Learning Journey I saw that There was a Nanogirl task I could do. It was making something that flies. I made a few paper aeroplanes and raced them on a hill near my house. I did a hypothesis on which one would win. 

I find it really interesting the way paper planes fly. Do you know how they fly? When the air under the wing is pushing up harder than the air over it is pushing down, the plane goes up and stays up. It is this difference in pressure that makes the paper plane fly and it works the same for real planes too!

I found it very tricky to throw these in the very strong winds here in Gisborne today. I am going to try doing this task again when the weather is nicer another day to see if I get different results!

Radial Balanced Flower Mandala Summer Leaning Journey Rua #2

Yesterday's Summer learning journey was to do a radial balanced flower mandala. I went straight to the step it up and did a stop motion so today I did the normal one because I like doing these tasks. Radial Balance means symmetry in several directions. No matter which way you look at it, it will look the same. Like if you look at an O on every side it will be the same!

I found it tricky to find flowers that were not rotten and dead because at the moment there is a storm where I am in Gisborne! It's Bruising the flowers and killing them.

Next time I would add more flowers to make it more detailed and bigger.

Radial Balanced Flower Mandala Summer Learning Journey Rua

Today in my summer learning journey I made a stop motion animation with a radial mandala using flowers, leaves and other materials found outside. Did you know, stop motion animation is how they make some cartoons? I never knew that until today! 

I chose to use the flowers I used because that was what was in my garden outside. My favourite of all the flowers was the yellow rose that I used a few of the petals from. We had to make it with radial symmetry which means it looks the same all the way around no matter what angle you look at it from. 

Stop motion uses images. you take a photo of each thing then move something a tiny bit by bit and take photos. together all the photos make a video. 

I found it tricky to add music to the stop motion because I would usually use WeVideo to make it but I have used it too much and have reached my limit so can't use it anymore. I ended up using Movavi. Another challenge I came across making this video was my camera is on my laptop built in but I needed to make a video from above. I had to think hard about it and then remembered over lockdown my brother had to use a plug in web cam. I used his plug in web cam and faced it downwards so I could make my stop motion.

Poetry Slam Summer Learning Journey Tahi

Yesterday, Summer Learning Journey sent out a task. It was really late at night because I still had school, So I chose to do it today. It is a Poetry Slam. A Poetry Slam is like a competition with a panel of judges and an audience. I made a slide with ideas for poems including summer. We watched poetry slams from Solli Raphael, Daisy Lavea-Timo, Marina Alefosio and Joshua Iosefo We did this to make it easier for us to know what to make or poem about and helpful words. I like doing this because I like finding interesting words meaning the same thing. 

Did you know, that we use brainstorming in school before writing to make it easier so we don't have to think right on the spot?

I found it tricky to think of some images I could do for softly and gently. So I thought of ways you can be soft or gentle and that's how I chose to do an image of someone petting a bunny.

Next time I would focus on camping as my subject for the words.

Reduce Reuse Recycle

Today the seniors in my school went to Ilminster to watch a play they put together about Reducing Reusing Recycling. When we got back, our teacher had a great idea. We should make reduce reuse recycle posters. I chose to make a GIF on canva to step it up. Another way we can reduce waste is composting so this is my GIF on composting.

I enjoyed watching the play and learning so much about recycling! I also loved making a GIF because I could make it look animated by using a lot of slides! Like, how I have 54 pages in 12.1 seconds!

I found it tricky to make it look animated because it had to be lower than 20 seconds. So I made each slide about 0.1 seconds long. It made my whole thing 12.1 seconds.

About Me

This week, we are starting with a new teacher due to our older teacher having a surgery. Our new teacher is just getting to know us this week and so we did an about me with what we like and don't.

I enjoyed making this about me because I got to write about everything I liked. I also enjoyed using Picrew to make an avatar. Picrew is a Japanese site that you can create things on. Like people.

I found it tricky to find out what I found tricky in school. I did not find anything tricky so I just deleted that box and moved another box into its place.

Stay Sunsmart!

Today for Cybersmart we were learning how to make a GIF on Canva. GIF stands for Generated Image File. We made a GIF about staying sunsmart during these hot days of Summer.

I enjoyed learning about GIFs because it is so fun learning about new stuff! Like, how GIFs can been seen on every type of device and how lots of people use them everyday.

I found it tricky to make it look animated because it had to be lower than 20 seconds. So I made each slide about 0.3 seconds long. It made my whole thing 19 seconds.

Next time I would add another sunsmart rule like play in the shade for it to be more interesting. I would also change the background on some of the slides.

Parihaka Feather

This week for reading we were learning how to identify the main points. We wrote words that are like peace in a Albatross feather because the people of Parihaka said that it will be a sign of peace.

I enjoyed learning about Parihaka because it is new learning for me. I also liked making the feather because I used polyline so I could change the colour and add more detail. That is how I add the lines going through the feather.

Next time I would change the colour of the writing inside the feather to make it more interesting. I would also change the background as well.

All Saints Day

Today is All Saints Day. All Saints Day is where we celebrate all saints. Tomorrow is All Souls day where we celebrate everyone who died. Did you know that there are lots of saints we don't know about?

I enjoyed learning about the saints because there are so many I have never heard of! I also liked doing the poster because I have not done one in a while.

I found it tricky to finish on time because I kept trying to make it look better. It took me quite a while to decide on a word font!

Next time I would try to make some better images and fonts. I would also change the background colour to just blue instead of a grey and blue mix.

Come Down Golden Google Drawing

This week we have been reading a book named Come Down Golden. It is about a boy named Louis who is in a wheelchair. He finds a monkey and wants to keep it. It is part of a group of books called Nitty Gritty Novels. It is by a author called Diana Noonan. We had to make a google drawing of one of the problems. I did it when Louis finds a dog and does not know what to do.

I enjoyed reading the book because I have read a book called Rat Island by Stu Duval, which was also a Nitty Gritty Novel, and really liked it. Come down Golden is a great book and I recommend it. Same with Rat Island.

I found it tricky making the drawing because at first I did not know what problem to do. So I looked through the book and this was the first problem.

Next time I would add a image of a real dog instead of cartoon as well as the grass and clouds. I would also change the person to a real one as well.

October Reflection

Today we are reflecting on our month of learning. Have you done a monthly reflection? We do monthly reflections so we can see how far we have come at the end of the month.

I enjoyed learning this month because we learnt so much this year and I loved learning this month.

I found it tricky to do a background because one of the boxes were already white so I could not make a cool gradient colour. So I left it white.

Next time I would change the colour to make it pop instead of it just being white and not that interesting.

Come Down Golden Quiz

This week we have been reading a book named Come Down Golden. It is about a boy named Louis who is in a wheelchair. He finds a monkey and wants to keep it. It is part of a group of books called Nitty Gritty Novels. It is by a author called Diana Noonan. We made a Quiz on the book on google forms. Please have a try!

I enjoyed reading the book because I have read a book called Rat Island by Stu Duval and really liked it. Come down Golden is a great book and I recommend it. Same with Rat Island.

I found it tricky making the quiz because I have not made a quiz since last year. I actually had to search how to make a correct answer! I needed to go to settings and press make this a quiz.

Next time I would add more questions to make the highest points you can get 30 instead of 25. I would also change the colour of the quiz and add a image of the book.

Frida Kahlo Art

At the end of last term we started doing art by are artist called Frida Kahlo. Frida Kahlo was a famous Mexican artist in the 1900s. She used lots of facial hair in her art pieces to make them more realistic. She suffered from a disease called Polio at the age 6. She also almost died from a bus crash at 18.

I enjoyed painting because I love creating things and drawing people. I also liked learning about Frida Kahlo because hearing people's story is really fun.

I found it tricky to draw the eyes because I make them at different levels everytime. So I drew a line using my ruler to draw a line and based the eyes off that.

Next time I would change the pattern on the shirt because I mostly squigilled on the paper and added flowers. Next time I would add triangles, squares and circles.

September Reflection

Today we were reflecting on our work from September. We need to do it every month because we can sit there and remember what we did. Have you done a monthly reflection?

This month had started in lockdown so we were in google meets for a while. We are not in lockdown anymore but we are in Alert Level 2 we have to use sanitizer when we walk into class. I am just glad that we are allowed back to school as lockdown learning is not as fun as learning in school.

In the last week, I did the St Marys got talent with Charlotte G to a mix of both the songs single ladies and run the world by Beyoncé. We only learnt the end of the dance that week and we won it. I am so proud of both of us.

Yesterday the speech finals were held. The People I were up against were my friends Mya and Angela. My speech was about why ballet is good for everyone. I am very proud of myself for placing first.

Today for an Aurora program that I have been doing, we had or last session and prize giving. I did this with my friend Charlotte J. The aurora group has lots of kids from 16 different schools in our district. I won the Sunny bush Empathy in Action award and cup.

I enjoyed doing the Reflection because we get to reflect all the things we did. I also enjoyed learning this month because we covered lots of new things like geometry and readers theatre.

Te Wiki O Te Reo Maori

This week for Cybersmart and Maori language week we were learning how to pronounce Maori places. We used this video as a starter. It shows how it is not towl- po it is Toe-Paw.

I learnt that lots of people get maori places wrong. So much that someone made a video about it. Lots of people must think this video is a help.

I enjoyed learning about how to pronounce the maori words because it is maori language week and I felt like I was embracing my maori language.

I found it tricky to make one for Waipaoa. At first I did Why-Pow-Aa But it would sound weird. So I did Why-Pa-Ooh-Aa.

Next time I would do more than one maori places because than you will learn more. I would also use a background because I would make it catch peoples eyes.

Shapes in Te Reo Maori

This week for maths and maori language week we went on a scavenger hunt for shapes in te reo. It was supposed to be an outside job but because it was raining we could not do it. We had to go in pairs so I chose to go with my best friend Mya. I was in charge of making sure that the slides were ready for them images and it was her job to find them.

I learnt that a triangle in te reo maori is tapatoru. Tapa means sides and toru means three so it means three sides. It is the same for square and rectangle. But they both have four sides! So their name is the same. Tapawha.

I enjoyed making the slides because it is a great way to show lots of learning on one project. I liked adding the shapes because I got to colour them and choose the font size.

I found it tricky to find a pentagon shape because I kept going past it. The buttons of the shapes we could choose from were quite small! I looked a bit harder and found that I could change a star into a pentagon and I used that.

Next time I would add a background to make the slide pop. Like a yellow because it is scientifically proven that yellow is the first colour the eye sees because it is the most vibrant.

Beatitudes

For reading we have been learning how to identify the character and/or author's point of view. I made a group of 5 with James, Baxter, Jakob A, Charlie and myself. We wrote about the beatitudes in the bible and made a slide. My group is called the Fantastic four and we had to discuss about two subjects. If New Zealand was nice to everyone and one about girls being aloud to play rugby.

I learnt that in some places girls can't play rugby. Here is a link to a story we read about this topic. I also learnt that this year, maori language week is the same week as social justice week.

I enjoyed discussing with my teammates because we all agreed on pretty much the same things. I also liked doing the slides with my small group because we got it done really quick.

I found it tricky to do anything because one of the people in my group kept copying and pasting a certain picture on every single slide. My group just got rid of them and he stopped.

Why Mr Wolf is Guilty!

This week for writing we were learning how to Structure persuasive writing. We wrote about why Mr Wolf from little red riding hood and 3 little pigs needs to go to jail. We had to put 3 arguments why is is guilty of murder.

I learnt that a wolf lives for 16 years. I put this among my number one reason why he is guilty. I also learnt that people have made remakes of famous stories and one is here. It is called Red, the pig and the automobile.

My favourite part was learning about the big bad wolf because he seemed to be in so many stories as the bad guy. He must be hogging the bad guy spotlight!

I found it tricky to know how to find much information about how long he would be in jail because on different sites it came up different things. So I found some that are the same on more sites then normal ones and put down those ones.

Next time I would add more reasons he is guilty because I had lots of reasons. I would also add more information because he is in so many stories!

Why Mr Wolf Is Guilty

I strongly believe that Mr Wolf from Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs is guilty because he Impersonated someone he killed, he threatened to eat 3 pigs and he broke into two houses. He should be in jail for the rest of his life!

Firstly, He impersonated someone he killed. He ate little Red Riding Hoods grandma and dressed up like her to make the little red riding hood think she is safe to approach. That is 10 years. Wolves live for 16 so he will be in there for most of his life.

Secondly, He threatened to eat three pigs. He also blew down their house to get to them. This caused a large amount of damage to their houses. For threatening cannibalism it is 14 years Jail time.

Thirdly, He broke into two peoples houses. He broke into Little Red’s grandma's house and the pig that built the brick house. For breaking and entering the house’s he needs to give $1000 dollars to each of the owners of the houses. 

In conclusion, I strongly believe that Mr Wolf is guilty because he Impersonated someone he killed, He threatened to eat 3 pigs and he broke into two houses. All the years and money together is 24 years and $2000 paid. He would be dead by the time he was allowed to get out!

Lego Balloon Car

Today we had a lego challenge. We had to choose to make a lego bridge, a lego zipline and a lego balloon car. I chose to do a lego balloon car. I used a lego car base, a few random pieces of lego and a balloon. 

I learnt why the car moved forward when I let go of the balloon. It goes forward because of the "newton's third law of motion". This means for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction. So the action of the air rushing out from the balloon is pushing against the air behind the car. The reaction is the air behind the car pushing against the car with the same force causing the car to move forward. 

My favourite part was trying it out because I did not know if it would work. It surprised me when it worked! It also went really far and almost fell of the table!

I found it tricky to make the car because it was kind of hard and it challenged me. It was kind of hard because the balloon would rub against the green bit and make the balloon not blow up. So I found some more pieces and built it up a bit more and I could blow up the balloon more.

Next time I would add more legos because it would make the car heavier and might make it go slower. I also would move my chromebook back so you could see where it landed.

St Francis

Today for R.E we were learning how to find facts and information. We wrote about our house saints. My house saint is St Francis. Whose is yours? If you do not have one, who is your favourite saint?

I learnt that  "Start by doing what's necessary, then do what's possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible."  means start at the beginning and make your way to the top and don't stop until you have reached for the stars.

My favourite part was learning about my saint because I did not know much about him. The only thing I knew was that he loved nature and the environment. Now I know when his feast day is and it is October the 4th.

I found it tricky to make St Francis out of shapes because I did not know what he looked like. So I went to this site called Ducksters and it showed lots of information and images so I used that site.

Next time I would add more information because there is not much information on my google drawing. I would also change the background because it is kind of plain. I would change it to environment.

Tongan Language Week

This week is Tongan language week. I learnt how to say lots of phrases and words in Tongan. I have put six of them into a slide with the pronunciation and the meaning of the word in it as well.

I learnt that Mālō e lelei means hello. I also learnt that Tongan is close to Maori because water is Inu in Maori and Tongan.

My favourite part was learning Tongan because I do not know much about Tonga. Also I liked using Mote because it helps me tell you how to pronounce it by me saying it.

I found it tricky to pronounce the words because I have never spoken Tongan before. But with a bit of practice thanks to this it was way easier.

Next time I would add more words because then you would learn more from this blog. I also would change the backgrounds so they are different every time.

Turtles

Today for Science/Art we were learning how to apply knowledge. We drew a turtle then put in five wow facts into a poster. I used a site called Remove.bg where it took away the background of my drawing. Did you know that turtles breathe through their butts?

I learnt that the earliest turtle fossil found was from 220 million years ago in the Triassic Period. I also learnt that Turtles have their spine on the inside of their shell.

My favourite part was learning about turtles because there was so much information I did not know. Like did you know turtles are not social creatures? And did you know that the smallest turtle is the Speckled Cape tortoise?

I found it tricky to know what to do as my facts because I did not know much information about turtles. So I chose to find a site and I found a site called Live Science and that is where I got a lot of my information from.

Next time I would change the background to sea because Turtles live in the sea and not floating in a big blue page. Also I would add more facts.

The Pepper Experiment

Today we did an experiment called the Pepper experiment. We needed water, pepper and soap. But I wanted to extend my learning and I added Dishwashing liquid and Hand sanitizer. We had to cover our finger in soap, hand sanitizer or dish washing liquid then dip it into a bowl with pepper in it. The pepper should spread away from your finger. 

This happens because Pepper doesn't dissolve or mix into water. Adding soap breaks down the surface tension of the waters 'skin' and as the water molecules spread out away from the soap, it brings the pepper with it.

I learnt that dishwashing liquid works best because the pepper spread away the fastest. On the other hand, Hand Sanitizer is not as good because it spread the least.

My favourite part was dipping my finger in the water because it was satisfying to watch. I also liked covering my finger in the soap, hand sanitizer and dishwashing liquid because it felt weird and I loved it.

It was difficult not to let the soap, hand sanitizer and soap fall in because it would ruin the experiment. So I tried not to but it fell in on the last one because soap was slippery and it fell of my fingers.

Next time I would try not to let it drip because the soap fell of my finger and fell in and it kind of ruined the experiment by pushing the pepper before I put my finger in. I would also look for a stronger hand sanitizer to see if it would make a difference.

CoSpaces

On Friday I made a VR game for the Aurora leadership program I have been going to. I sent it to my deputy principal because I was proud about what I had made and she asked if I wanted to do this as a task on monday. I said yes, so I made a game for the seniors for their school work. I was pretty happy to see it this morning with our work. I made my game on a site called CoSpaces, I have linked it and showed you how to make questions and animals move around in a couple of screencastify videos.

I learnt that you could make educational games on CoSpaces. I got introduced to CoSpaces earlier this year in an aurora digital leaders programme made a game about Whirikoka. I learnt alot about coding and traditional stories.

My favourite part was making the game because it was nice that I could make a game that lots of people would play! I will put the link to the game in my slides. Feel free to play it!

Next time I would teach you more about how to use CoSpaces because it is a bit hard and sometimes you get stuck. I hope you like my game though!

Cats Or Dogs?

Today we were learning how to apply knowledge. We were also learning how to do persuasive writing. We wrote about why Cats are better than dogs or why Dogs are better than cats. I did not know how to make up my mind so I did both. Did you know Dogs can sniff at the same time as breathing? Did you know a house cat is genetically 95% tiger?

I learnt that cats and dogs are very different and not almost the same because they are pets. I also learnt that cats are quieter than dogs. Finally, I learnt that Dogs protect you.

My favourite part was learning about the most famous pets because there was so much information I did not know. Like did you know it is hard to train a cat but there are some cats that are trained? And did you know that even a chiwawa can protect you from strangers because dogs can smell fear.

I found it tricky to know what to choose because I liked both Dog and Cat. So I chose to do both and I found a site called The Spruce Pets and that is where I got a load of my information from.

Next time I would make a slide to hold my writing and plan because it would take up a lots of space just under this writing.

Fathers Day Card

Today is Fathers day. On Wednesday we made a card for our Dad and scheduled it for Sunday. The photo is from Wednesday so it is not open. I have also taken a photo today and video of the card on the inside. Did you know that most countries around the world celebrate Father's Day on the third Sunday of June?

My Dad fixes lots of computers. He is working from home and at the moment and is quite busy with Google meets and jobs for customers. I made his card like an HP computer and I said "It is very slow, can you fix it?" I said this because I put in a loading screen that you could pull a piece of paper and it revealed a message. "I Love You". He loved it!

I learnt that Fathers Day is always on the first Sunday of September. Fathers day is also celebrated by more than 111 countries.

My favourite part was seeing my Dad open my card because it was really nice to see. I also liked reading what my siblings wrote in cards they made. They were such nice cards!

I found it tricky to stick the parts of the card to the card because we had no glue sticks. So I tried sticking the parts to the paper with pva glue. It was not as sticky when it first went on but it worked enough to keep it in the card and once it dried it was fine.

Next time I would change the card and put more in it because there was not much writing. I would also add a picture on the screen because it would make it nicer.

Blog Log 2

Today we are reflecting on our learning from this week. Have you ever done a reflection on your week? My favourite task was Stop Motion Animation that I did on Wednesday. Did you know you can schedule posts on blogger? My Father's day card is scheduled for Sunday so keep an eye out after lunch.

I learnt that it is good to reflect on your learning because it helps you to review instead of just carrying on doing things as you have always done them. I also learnt lots throughout the week just by doing tasks.

My favourite part of reflecting on my learning is getting to see how much I have done. In my slide each task I did got me five points. and I got 80! I did all 15 blogs! I am really proud I did that much! This is Number 16.

I found it tricky to keep focused because my brother kept jumping on me and I get a bit distracted. So I went to my room or Caravan and close the door and I could not hear anything they were saying or doing.

Next time I would do more extra tasks because it gets us extra points. I did one extra blog. I made a VR game on a site called CoSpaces. Learn more about it on the link I put here. Hope you like this blog!

Bouncy Egg 3

Today we came back to our eggs from yesterday. We put them in vinegar and coke to see what happened in 24 hours. The acid in the vinegar and coke should have dissolved the egg shell and it should bounce if you drop it. If you want to get more information click here  1 & 2.

The one in vinegar sort of worked. It had dissolved the shell and it was kind of squishy but when we dropped it, it smashed like a normal egg would.

The one in coke didn't work as well but I did notice some changes to the egg. The shell was a bit softened and it was starting to dissolve.

Next time I would leave these for longer. Three days might see better results!

My Escape House

Today for an Aurora Leadership Program, we were challenged to make an escape room. I chose to make an Escape HOUSE. I made a full game using CoSpaces. The coding on CoSpaces is like Scratch. Just letting you know, It works better on computers. I enjoyed making the Escape house on CoSpaces because I knew that not that many people would do it. I found it tricky get the door not to glitch because it went through the wall and blocked the way of another door. So I turned it °180 and it opened inwards and fixed the problem. Bouncy Egg 2

I decided to try the egg with coca-cola as well. If you have no Idea what I am talking about, Go to this link. Here. It sunk right to the bottom! It also shows that coke eats away at teeth like how it will with the shell of the egg. I enjoyed watching them because it looked really cool! I did not find anything tricky! Here it is:
