Summer Symmetry!

Today for my summer learning journey I learnt about lines symmetry. There are actually two types of symmetrical lines, Radial or Bilateral. Radial is circular and the same on lots of different angles and bilateral is the same on both sides with one line of symmetry. Did you know, your face is not completely symmetrical? It is close to having bilateral symmetry but it not the same on both sides! Unlike bugs that are commonly the same on both sides! I liked this activity very much because I got to find things around my property and see if they have lines of symmetry. I did this by going around the house and finding shapes like ovals, circles, squares and rectangles. I didn't realise how many there were everywhere!. The hardest part was removing the background from each picture in the slides because there were so many I needed to do! The easiest part was finding the symmetrical lines because I just had to look for places where it was the same on each side. If I had to do it again I would change the background of the slides to a different colour because I was thinking of doing black and white instead. I would also like to make some symmetry art out of shells and seaweed next time!
Here it is:

  1. Mōrena Kylah,

Fiona here from the Summer Learning Journey. I am very impressed by your fantastic blog post on Summer Symmetry - ka pai! You have written a really in-depth introduction to the task and put in a lot of effort to create an impressive slide deck.

I really like the way you have described the difference between radial and bilateral symmetry - well done! Great work stepping it up and creating your own symmetrical art using pretty flowers from your garden.

After reading your blog, I had a look in the mirror and you are correct... faces are not symmetrical! My eyebrows and eyes are slightly different on both sides, but I'm glad it is only a little bit!

For all your effort and for Stepping it Up, I am marking this post as a standout blog so it receives BONUS POINTS. Great stuff!

    Keep up the fantastic mahi.

    Mā te wā,
    Fiona (SLJ).
