One Is A Snail, Ten Is A Crab Summer Learning Journey Toru Tekau Ma Rua

Today for Summer Learning Journey we read a book called One is a snail, ten is a crab. It is about counting to ten and counting in tens. It was counting using the amount of things legs. Like how number four in the book was a dog that has four legs. I had to choose between slides and pen and paper. I remembered that in 2020 my class used a site called Book Creator. You can use it to make books. I decided to make my book there.

Did you know that people first counted to ten in the 7th Century?

I found it tricky to embed the book. I later figured out that you can not embed books onto blogs. I did find out how to make a link to get to a site that has the book. I also found it tricky to find out what to make in my book. I thought after a little while, I thought of adding a Maori translation for each English sentence.

One Point Perspective Art Summer Learning Journey Toru Tekau Ma Tahi

Today for the Summer Learning Journey we did a one-point perspective art.

One point perspective is a drawing method that shows how things appear to get smaller as they get further away, converging towards a single 'vanishing point' on the horizon line. It is a way of drawing objects so that they look three-dimensional and realistic.

I enjoyed drawing the shapes for the one-point perspective art because I could even make up some shapes. I actually put in a Harry Potter lightning bolt after my favourite book series Harry Potter.

I found it tricky to do straight lines because at first, I could not find a ruler. I looked for a while then asked if he had one. He told me had a metal one then got it out for me to use.

Magnetic Haiku - 2 - Poetry Slam - Summer Learning Journey Toru Tekau

Today for Summer Learning Journey we had a Poetry Slam task. We had to make magnetic poems. I really like this task so I decided to do another haiku magnetic poem. I made sure I remembered syllables 5,7,5 because if I didn't it wouldn't be a haiku.

Did you know that Magnetic Poetry was invented by Dave Kapell, who was a songwriter? He wrote words on pieces of paper and rearranged them, hoping to use it as a starting point for lyrics. To keep the arrangements of words from being accidentally disturbed, he thought to glue the paper to magnets.

I enjoyed making the poems because I could write whatever I want. It was also hard to make the poems because I only had certain words to use. I made sure that I had a bit of a plan before making them so it was much easier knowing which words are where.

Today for Summer Learning Journey we had a Poetry Slam task. We had to make magnetic poems. When I first saw it I had no idea what it meant! I looked at the google drawing and it seemed quite hard to do so I typed and printed all the words, cut them up and made them on my lounge floor.

Optical Illusions - Nanogirl - Summer Learning Journey Rua Tekau Ma Ono

Today for Summer Learning Journey we had a Nanogirl task. It was on optical illusions. An optical illusion is something that deceives the eye by appearing different to what it is.

Did you know that people started doing optical illusions in 5 BC in ancient Greece? They used it in architecture and art. Did you know a rainbow is an optical illusion?

The most interesting one I made was the one Nanogirl did. I used a glass of water and a picture that I drew of an arrow. I put the paper behind the glass and it changed direction. Do you know why this happens? I'll tell you. The light changes direction each time it goes through the glass. This is called refraction and it happens because light slows down when it is behind and speeds up when it leaves the front of the glass. This is sort of hard to explain.

I really enjoyed making the optical illusions because it made me feel like a magician.  It was quite easy and I did not find anything tricky. I especially liked doing the pink paper one and tricking my Mum and Aunty with it.
