Treasure Island Whanau Challenge Summer Learning Journey Rima Tekau Ma Waru
Today for the Summer Learning Journey we had to do Treasure island challenges with our whanau. We had to create some challenges then do it with our families. treasure island is a tv show. they have to compete in challenges and try not to be eliminated!
We had to create challenges. My challenges were a gumboot throw, who could stand on one leg for the longest and who could eat chocolate with a knife and fork the fastest.
I think the trickiest out of all of them was the chocolate one. The chocolate had been in the fridge for a while so it was hard to cut and was hard to eat. My brother Seb (who won that challenge) seemed to not use his knife. So we don't know if that would be cheating or it being smart for not wasting time using a knife.
My family thought that this task was very funny and enjoyed it very much. At the start of the stand on one leg challenge when I was announcing what it was my brother Killian threw a car and that was very funny to everyone and that was why everyone started laughing in that task. Also, in the gumboot throw task, my one-year-old brother Teddy was supposed to do it with my Dad. But he wanted to wear his boot more than he wanted to throw it.
Thank you for reading my blog. Here is my video of the challenges:

Nature Scavenger Hunt! Summer Learning Journey Rima Tekau Ma Whetu
Today for the Summer Learning Journey my family went out on a nature scavenger hunt. We printed out the list provided five times so all five of the kids in my family had one, even my 1-year-old brother! We drove to Grays Bush once Dad finished work and did our scavenger hunt!
Many people believe that Elsa Maxwell created scavenger hunts as a fun party event in the 1930s. Scavenger hunts can take place pretty much anywhere, from parks to forests to even your backyard! Scavenger hunts can make something a bit boring, a bit more fun and it makes you really look at your surroundings.
I enjoyed running around Grays Bush seeing all the native trees and bushes! I even saw a lot of Kawakawa everywhere (Which is something I don't see often!). My siblings all had fun climbing around fallen tree stumps. Grays bush is a native walk we have here in Gisborne. It's about a 5-minute drive from our home and is protected by DOC. I have put a little bit of information about Grays bush in my video.
I found it challenging to edit this video. I used my Mums' phone to take the videos and when I uploaded them to the computer they didn't work very well with MOVAVI. It took a while and I had to get my Mum to help me stop the videos from glitching but together we worked it out so I could then edit them. I think I was working on my edit of the video longer than we spent in Grays Bush!
Next time I would use our camera instead of the phone so I don't get the strange issues with the video.

Snowball Poem - Poetry Slam - Step It Up - Summer Learning Journey Rima Tekau Ma Ono
Today for the Summer Learning Journey we had a poetry slam task. It was to do a snowball poem. This is the step it up task.
A snowball poem has a lot of lines and each line is longer than the last. Sometimes by one letter, and sometimes by one word- like a snowball rolling down a hill, it gets bigger and bigger as it rolls down! There was not very much information on snowball poems, so there is not much information here but the name pretty much explains it!
I found it tricky to make the right amount in my sentences because I kept accidentally having one word less or one word more.
Thank you for reading my blog. Here is my Snowball Poem Step it up:

I enjoyed making my poem about surfing because the beach and boogie boarding are one of my favourite things to do in summer. My whanau go every night when the weather is good after dinner to have some family time there while the beach isn't too hot and the chance of getting burnt is a bit lower. One day I want to get a surfboard and start surfing too!

Make Your Own Game! - Nanogirl Task - Summer Learning Journey Rima Tekau Ma Wha
Today for the Summer Learning Journey we had a Nanogirl task. It was to make a game out of recycling.
The first traces of games created by humans were found in Europe and were found to be from the Bronze Age nearly 7000 years ago. Yet no one has found anything about the rules or the way the game is played.
It turned out that my Dad took away all the recycling in the weekend so we had no recycling. So I made a board game using paper and a few colours pencils. I also made an online 8-bit game on a site called Make code Arcade where I could code using blocks and draw my own characters and backgrounds.
The way you play my board game is you first pick a character. The characters are a mask, a bottle of hand sanitiser, a cotton swab, a QR code and a vaccine. Then the oldest playing gets to go first. If you land on a chance card, you pick a chance card and do what it says. The first one to get to the finish line wins!
I enjoyed coming up with ideas for what my games would be about. I had an idea about a Covid game; Where you had to not catch covid and get all the way to the end while landing on things that might, either, stop you from moving for a few turns, make you go up some spaces and down some spaces.
Thank you for reading my blog. Here is a slide with my Don't Catch Covid game:

Summer Sounds Summer Learning Journey Rima Tekau Ma Toru
Yesterday my family walked up Kaiti Hill.
While walking up, we found a part of the hill that had a lot of cicadas, birds and crickets. I remembered a Summer Learning Journey task that I did not do called Summer Sounds where we had to record a sound from outside and put it on our blog. So I asked my Mum if I could borrow her phone to record, and she said yes.
I enjoyed recording the sounds because there were so many sounds I could hear! This task was very straightforward and I could not find anything tricky! Though while recording my brothers and sisters would start talking. So that was probably the trickiest part! Having to stop four siblings from talking!
Thank you for reading my blog! Here are my sounds:

Hidden Colours In Ink - Science Experiment! - Summer Learning Journey Rima Tekau Ma Rua
Today for the Summer Learning Journey we did a science experiment.
It was about putting colour onto a bit of toilet paper/paper towel, then putting it into water. We then wait until it bled to see if we can see more colours than just the colour we put on. Like, say I draw black onto it and let it bleed for a little while and then the black will become black and blue.
I enjoyed dipping all the toilet paper into the water because it just felt strange and I liked it! I also liked putting the colours on the toilet paper because they made some cool colours from one colour!
This was a straightforward task and I did not find anything tricky! I enjoyed editing the video and sped them up, removed the audio and replaced it with some music. I really enjoy editing videos, and I am getting quicker at doing it on Movavi.
Thank you for reading my blog. Here is my experiment:

Quatrain - Poetry Slam - Summer Learning Journey Rima Tekau Ma Tahi
Today I did a little research on different types of poems you can write. I found a poem called a Quatrain and made one about my brother who needs glasses. I also noticed that the poetry slam was up to 99 so this blog will be the 100th!
A quatrain is any 4 line poem. 15 possible rhyme sequences. For this one, I did "AABB". But you can do AAAA, ABAB, ABBA and ABCB too!
I enjoyed making my poem because I could make it as funny as I wanted it to be. I put in my poem that when he loses them he cannot see, he might just walk into a tree. I thought it was quite funny as I put it in!
I found it tricky to know what to make my quatrain poem about. I was looking around for inspiration when I saw my brother with his glasses and made a poem about him!

Silly Algebra! Summer Learning Journey Rima Tekau
Today for the Summer Learning Journey we did algebra. We had to make questions with random shapes that have a number that it is connected to. Like a circle that means the number 4.
Algebra is a type of maths that includes letters and shapes. It makes you break down the problem to work out the answer because parts of the problem are missing. Lots of people find it very challenging because often it means you have to start at the end of the problem and work backwards to get the right answer. I think it's lots of fun because it is a bit more of a challenge!
I enjoyed making algebra problems for people to solve. Next time I think I would make the problem harder and longer.
Thank you for reading my blog. Here are my algebra problems:

Zhushing It Up! - Nobody Laughed - Tie-Dye T-Shirt - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Iwa
Yesterday for the Summer Learning Journey we read a book called Nobody Laughed.
It is about a boy named Aiden who brought his new bright green bag to school. Everyone had that same bag. So at the end of the day, there was a huge mixup with the bags, so the teacher went through the bags and called out some of the stuff that was in them. There were all these funny things that shouldn't be coming to school but nobody laughed as they came out of the bags. Aiden thought that they were saving the laughs for his bag so he hoped that he was last so the teacher did not take what was in the bag out. Luckily he was last but Sefton thought it was unfair that we could not see what was in Aidens bag. Aiden opened his bag and showed everyone and nobody laughed.
I think that Aiden brought his Teddy Bear to school and kept it in his bag because he assumed that people would make fun of him because of it. It even said in the book! "When the others saw it, he would surely die of embarrassment."
I think that everyone had the same bag because they were, as said in the book "The perfect size for his book, his lunch and his secret favourite thing." Because everyone all had their lunch, books and a secret favourite thing they would all need the same size bag and maybe there was only one colour of the bag available. The colour is bright green!
I think that the teacher should not have gone through the student's stuff. I think that the students should have named their bags like on the front or back to know which one is which. Like what if there was something super embarrassing that had accidentally been brought to school then having to have it be taken out of their bag in front of an entire class?
I think that it is okay for people to have the same thing as long as it I named and they like what it is. But if you aren't happy with how it looks you can always customize it!
The task was to take something pretty much everybody would have and make it your own. I thought that pretty much everyone would have a plain white shirt. I took one of my white shirts and asked my Mum if I could tie-dye it with a tie-dye kit I got for Christmas.
Did you know that tie-dying came out in the 5th century AD? The earliest noted records about tie-dye come from China and Japan. The procedure was used during the T'ang Dynasty China and the Nara Period in Japan. People used natural dyes from berries, leaves, roots and flowers to colour clothes.

Arctic Adventure - Minecraft Edu - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Waru
Today for Summer Learning Journey we had a Minecraft Education Edition task. It was about living in the arctic. We went along on a dog sled and explored around the arctic learning about living in the arctic.
Did you know that in the Arctic your brain gets smaller? It takes an entire year for this to happen though, so if you go there for a small holiday for some reason there is no way that your brain will shrink!
There are all types of things you need to survive in the arctic. Of course, you need warm clothes! Other things you need are food, you could bring a fishing rod there to fish for some food in the ice, if you want, a sled to slide down snow mountains and also cooking supplies for all the fish you catch!
Ice fishing is kind of a need in the Arctic! But it is not the same as Normal sea fishing! Ice fishing poles are much shorter than regular rods! A short rod allows you to fish in the small space of a shelter, and it also lets you sit close to your fishing hole. While regular fishing you have bigger rods because you have lots of space.
The Arctic is crucial for lots of reasons. Because it helps keep our world’s climate in balance. The Climate is taking effect on the weather and some animals homes are getting too hot. That means that the glaciers in the Arctic are melting which is making the sea higher.
The arctic poles are melting because carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions have raised temperatures, even higher in the poles, and as a result, glaciers are rapidly melting, calving off into the sea and retreating on land.

Extinction Biodiversity Crisis - Minecraft Edu - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Whetu
Today for the Summer Learning Journey we had a Minecraft task. It was about extinct animals. We rode a roller coaster and along the way, there were lots of extinct animals like a Moa and Saber-Toothed Cat.
I used the camera and portfolio items in Minecraft Education to take photos the name them. When I finished taking photos, I got the photos and put them into slides and researched to add facts. I found it really sad that most of the ways the animals had died were because of hunting by humans in the most recent years, it is our job to protect our animals so that no other animals join this list! look at the slides to see information on each of the animals.
I enjoyed seeing all the amazing animals that could have been alive today. I would think it would be cool if everybody had saber-toothed cats as pets! I did not find anything tricky in this task because it was very straightforward.

Ice Art Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Ono
Yesterday for Summer Learning Journey we made ice art. We had to go and collect things from nature and then place them in water which we put into the freezer overnight
This task was inspired by Russian artist Evgeny Honour, who makes resin animals that look like they are ice! As soon as I read the activity I remembered we have these bug cupcake silicone moulds which I thought would be perfect for this activity, so I got to work looking for some little bits from nature outside my home.
For the step it up activity we had to learn about the rule of thirds which means you have the focus or your photography or art to the third of the picture, not centred. I did this activity in a container but I found it really difficult to keep the flowers from floating away so it didn't turn out exactly how I planned because even once it was in the freezer it had moved a little bit so I am not really that happy with how it looks now. If I did it again I would try with a little bit less water so the flowers have less water to float away in. I had designed the ice art to have what looked like a flowering plant growing at the third mark. We were also to use the rule of odds, which means that you always put an odd number of everything there so everything inside my ice art is an odd number!
Even though I used cooled boiled water, the water was a bit cloudy coming out of the freezer. maybe next time I would put the boiled water in the fridge after so that it's really cold boiled water!
I am really happy with how the dragonfly turned out, I think that's my favourite one! The ladybird got a bit more cloudy and I used light flowers in it so it's harder to see the flowers inside it.
Thank you for reading my blog, Here is my ice art:

Cicada Drawing - Starring A Live Cicada! - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Rima
Today for Summer Learning Journey we learnt about cicadas and exoskeletons.
An exoskeleton is the hard shell over cicadas. it is also what is on cockroaches, grasshoppers, crabs, crayfish and other shellfish! It kind of means their bones are on the outside.
We were sent out to look for some cicada shells to create some art with. They shed their exoskeletons as they grow because the exoskeletons don't grow with them so they have to shed skin and grow new ones. My problem was I couldn't find any! I did find a real live and very friendly cicada that was happy to sit on my arm and come into my home though.
Did you know recently it was discovered that cicadas have antibacterial structures on their wings? This is being used to inspire medical advancements such as antibacterial cornea replacements! So cool! Cicadas are one of my favourite insects because there are so many cool facts about them. What's your favourite insect?
Because I couldn't find any exoskeletons, I decided to do the activity where you draw a cicada. I found it nice and easy to follow the steps and I am quite pleased with how it looks.
for my step it up I made a cicada scroggin. Cicadas are very high in protein so they are perfect for when you are tramping because they don't take up much space and would be very light to carry. I have heard people talking about chocolate-covered cockroaches before so I thought if I covered them in chocolate and added them to a scroggin mix it would be good for a hike! I don't think I would ever eat it though! I like looking at cicadas but I don't think I would ever eat one!

Lilys Finger - The Limerick - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Wha
Today I got a comment from Naomi who is from Manaiakalani. She said I should turn my Clerihew about my sister into a Limerick. In my Limerick, I say it was fixed by a doctor named Billy, but It was not actually fixed by a doctor named Billy the name just rhymed.
A limerick is usually funny and a bit rude. They have five lines with a rhyme scheme of AABBA, in which the first, second and fifth lines rhyme, while the third and fourth lines are shorter and share a different rhyme.
I enjoyed making it a bit funnier because it was scary at the time but we can laugh about it now that it is back on. I did not find anything tricky. I thought this task was really fun and I did not find anything tricky.

Clerihew Poem - Poetry Slam - Step It Up - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Toru
Today for the summer learning journey I wanted to do the Poetry Slam Step it up for this week. We had to do a Clerihew poem and animate it. I chose to make my poem from scratch. It was about my sister who jammed her finger in the door then had to go to the hospital. I actually wrote about this earlier this year. I have a blog about it, check it here. Don't worry, the doctors have stitched my sister's finger back on so it is still there.
I used scratch to code my clerihew poem and used screencastify to record me saying the poem as well as the code running.
A Clerihew poem only has just a few simple rules: They are four lines long. The first and second lines rhyme with each other, and the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other. The first line names a person, and the second line ends with something that rhymes with the name of the person. They are normally for fun.
I enjoyed making it a bit funnier because it was scary at the time but we can laugh about it now that it is back on. I did not find anything tricky. I thought this task was really fun and I did not find anything tricky.

Magnetic Poetry - Poetry Slam - Step It Up - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau Ma Rua
Today for Summer Learning Journey I remembered that I forgot to do the step it up for one of the poetry slams. I made up my own words on the template and made a haiku out of them.
Did you know that Magnetic Poetry was invented by Dave Kapell, who was a songwriter? He wrote words on pieces of paper and rearranged them, hoping to use it as a starting point for lyrics. To keep the arrangements of words from being accidentally disturbed, he thought to glue the paper to magnets.
I enjoyed making the poems because I could write whatever I want. It was also hard to make the poems because I only had certain words to use. I made sure that I had a bit of a plan before making them so it was much easier knowing which words are where.
Thank you for reading my blog. Here is my magnetic poem step it up:
Then I got my Mum to make one using my words. So here is the one my Mum made:

Musical Instruments - Nanogirl - Summer Learning Journey Wha Tekau
Today for Summer Learning Journey we had a Nanogirl task. It was to make musical instruments out of random things in your house.
Did you know that musical instruments were invented in 2800 BC or earlier? The oldest musical instrument in the world is a Neanderthal flute (I will put an image below this paragraph) Which was made from a bone of a young cave bear and has four holes.
Here is the Neanderthal Flute:
I enjoyed making my musical instruments because I could pretty much make something make noise when I hit them or make noise when I blow on them. I also liked glueing the straws together to make the harmonica.
I found it tricky to make the mugs ding when I hit them. I tried to fill the mugs with more or less water but they did not seem to change. I think that I should have used glass but because I have really young siblings we can't really have glass because if my youngest brother, who is 1, would throw them so we only have plastic glasses. I thought using the ceramic mugs we have would help make a better sound but it didn't work as well as I thought it would.
Thank you for reading my blog, here are my musical instruments:

Sun Rain And Clouds Summer Learning Journey Toru Tekau Ma Iwa
Today for Summer Learning Journey I had to make a weather journal.
I enjoyed logging the weather over the last few days. A few times I got quite cold going outside as it was very cold over the last few days except today!
I did not find anything tricky in this task because it was very straightforward. But it took 3 days to do it. So the tricky part was waiting!
Next time I would add the weather man's prediction and see how different the prediction is to the actual weather on the day!
Thank you for reading my blog. Here is my weather from Friday to Sunday:

Today for Summer Learning Journey we had to pretend we were news anchors. My favourite news anchor is Amanda Gillies because she is from Gisborne, went to both saint marys and the school I'm going to this year as a year 7 and she also did tap dancing like I do.
Did you know that in 1920 the first radio news broadcast happened in Detroit, America?
I enjoyed recording my voice on a site called online voice recorder which records your voice when you click one button!
I found it tricky to find a place in my house that was not loud because I have four younger siblings that are all quite loud.

My Inventions - Snoozeatron! - Summer Learning Journey Toru Tekau Ma Whetu
Today for the Summer Learning Journey I made some inventions to stop some problems that get very annoying like having bad dreams, falling asleep and losing one of each sock! I have tried to come up with ideas to help those problems!
I enjoyed this task because I could think of any problem for the step it up! I actually had a long think on what question needs answering the most. But even though this does not happen to some people, I thought of finding socks when you can't find the pair to one.
I found it tricky to come up with a design for my inventions. After a little while, I chose to make my kick start a gun sort of thing with nice smelling rainbows coming out of it and a really simple design of a few lines for my step it up.

Geometric Animal Art Summer Learning Journey Toru Tekau Ma Wha
Today for Summer Learning Journey we made geometric animals. I made a geometric turtle using polyline on google slides. When I see a turtle reminds me of the ocean and swimming in summer.
Geometric style art, is an ancient Greek art, primarily of vase painting, that began about 900 bc.
I used 49 Triangles and 3 Squares in my Geometric Art. I added circles in my slide for bubbles which then made 5 Circles. That adds up to 57 shapes in total.
I enjoyed making the turtle on the slides because I could use polyline and that was very easy to use. This task was really fun and really easy, so I found nothing tricky in this task.
Thank you for reading my blog. Here is my turtle:

Summer Essentials Summer Learning Journey Toru Tekau Ma Toru
Today for the Summer Learning Journey we made a collage of our Summer Essentials.
I think the kiwi Summer is the best! Here are my Top Ten Essentials and why I think they are so important.
1. Sunblock. You need this! It will save your skin from the harsh sun.
2. Long sleeve rash top. My family always wears long-sleeved rash shirts in summer. Sometimes the sunblock doesn't work, especially for me with very pale skin, so we must wear long sleeves to keep our arms safe from the sun.
3. Water bottle. Drinking water keeps you hydrated when the sun tries to dehydrate you.
4. Hat. They help to be sun safe-helps protect your face, neck and head from the strong UV rays we have here in New Zealand.
5. Sunglasses. These look cool but also protect your eyes from the bright sun!
6. Chips and dip. What's a kiwi summer without our favourite summery snack?
7. Jandals. These help stop your feet from the burning sand on your dash into the nice cold sea water!
8. Sprinkler. This is so much fun to jump around in summer. even better if you put it under the trampoline and jump on the tramp with it going!
9. Boogie board. These make the sea so much fun. Catching waves is so much fun, and you don't need to balance like you do on a surfboard.
10. Sun Umbrella. This helps keep you in the shade on those really hot days.
Kiwi summers are so much fun but we really need to be careful in the really strong UV rays here. So lots of my essentials are about being sun safe- but it doesn't stop us from having a really fun summer!

One Is A Snail, Ten Is A Crab Summer Learning Journey Toru Tekau Ma Rua
Today for Summer Learning Journey we read a book called One is a snail, ten is a crab. It is about counting to ten and counting in tens. It was counting using the amount of things legs. Like how number four in the book was a dog that has four legs. I had to choose between slides and pen and paper. I remembered that in 2020 my class used a site called Book Creator. You can use it to make books. I decided to make my book there.
Did you know that people first counted to ten in the 7th Century?
I found it tricky to embed the book. I later figured out that you can not embed books onto blogs. I did find out how to make a link to get to a site that has the book. I also found it tricky to find out what to make in my book. I thought after a little while, I thought of adding a Maori translation for each English sentence.
Thank you for reading my blog. Click the link here.

One Point Perspective Art Summer Learning Journey Toru Tekau Ma Tahi
Today for the Summer Learning Journey we did a one-point perspective art.
One point perspective is a drawing method that shows how things appear to get smaller as they get further away, converging towards a single 'vanishing point' on the horizon line. It is a way of drawing objects so that they look three-dimensional and realistic.
I enjoyed drawing the shapes for the one-point perspective art because I could even make up some shapes. I actually put in a Harry Potter lightning bolt after my favourite book series Harry Potter.
I found it tricky to do straight lines because at first, I could not find a ruler. I looked for a while then asked if he had one. He told me had a metal one then got it out for me to use.

Magnetic Haiku - 2 - Poetry Slam - Summer Learning Journey Toru Tekau
Today for Summer Learning Journey we had a Poetry Slam task. We had to make magnetic poems. I really like this task so I decided to do another haiku magnetic poem. I made sure I remembered syllables 5,7,5 because if I didn't it wouldn't be a haiku.
Here is my magnetic poem:

Magnetic Poems - Poetry Slam - Summer Learning Journey Rua Tekau Ma Whetu
Today for Summer Learning Journey we had a Poetry Slam task. We had to make magnetic poems. When I first saw it I had no idea what it meant! I looked at the google drawing and it seemed quite hard to do so I typed and printed all the words, cut them up and made them on my lounge floor.

Optical Illusions - Nanogirl - Summer Learning Journey Rua Tekau Ma Ono
Today for Summer Learning Journey we had a Nanogirl task. It was on optical illusions. An optical illusion is something that deceives the eye by appearing different to what it is.
Did you know that people started doing optical illusions in 5 BC in ancient Greece? They used it in architecture and art. Did you know a rainbow is an optical illusion?
The most interesting one I made was the one Nanogirl did. I used a glass of water and a picture that I drew of an arrow. I put the paper behind the glass and it changed direction. Do you know why this happens? I'll tell you. The light changes direction each time it goes through the glass. This is called refraction and it happens because light slows down when it is behind and speeds up when it leaves the front of the glass. This is sort of hard to explain.
I really enjoyed making the optical illusions because it made me feel like a magician. It was quite easy and I did not find anything tricky. I especially liked doing the pink paper one and tricking my Mum and Aunty with it.
Thank you for reading my blog. Here are my Illusions on some slides:
